Editor’s Assignment — Winner of the September 2014 assignment — Interesting Cloud Formations (full story)

September 2014 Winner — Shannon Heryet of Alberta

Taken in West Lethbridge, AB, this shot was not Heryet’s original intention. She was out in search of lightning that day as a prairie storm approached. After snapping numerous frames, Heryet decided that being out in an open field with a metal tripod in the face of a fast-moving storm might not be such a safe idea. The cloud formations would have to do.

It was good judgement, on Heryet’s part, that she decided to take this photo and play it safe. The cloud formation is incredible and reminds us of the power of Mother Nature. The sheer size of the storm puts things into perspective for us. If you look closely at the photo you can see a farm house appearing as only a speck in relation to the storm clouds. Great shot!
