PEI
Jewel of the
Northumberland
Strait

I discovered “The Island,” as it’s referred
to by all who live here, almost 27 years
ago. On a clear June evening I travelled
by ferry across the Northumberland
Strait from Nova Scotia and followed a
winding road through a landscape that, in
the sweet evening light, glowed in vibrant
primary colours: green fields, red cliffs and
blue water. I was smitten, and I’ve lived
here ever since.
Had I arrived in January, it might have
been a different story! Even the original
Mi’Kmaq inhabitants, like today’s tourists,
visited the island only during the summer
months. Island winters can be challenging.
“Dirty weather” is the local term....
