I've had digital subscriptions in the past and found no difference from a printed copy really, other than where you have to be to read it. (At your computer). Most times that's not a problem, but there are times I would have prefered a printed copy.
All in all though, if OPC went digital it would not cause me to stop purchasing it. _________________ We don't stop laughing because we get old, we get old because we stop laughing. |

For me digital is a problem. I don't iAnything.
I spend enough hours in front of a screen everyday. When I get a chance to read I prefer to do it either outdoors (summer) or by the fireplace(winter), neither location conducive to electronics.
I've done a lot of my reading and writing in the tub too, the old smith-corona had taken a few dunking and survived before it finally gave up the ghost. Would not want to repeat that with electronics.. _________________ Peter.

Paper, or bust! When it comes to books and mags, that how I like them--like the smell of a magazine shop--there's nothing else like it! _________________ Photo Bug |

I'm with Peter and Bill. I also do not iAnything - no need for these things, yet.

I guess this will somehow be the future for magazines or books sooner or later (I think in 2009 amazon sold more ebooks than paper books already). It is also better for the environment to distribute magazines/books as a data file compared to a print on paper.
I would understand why a publisher would switch to distributing a product as a data file instead of paper. Less production and distribution costs.
I still prefer printed magazines and books and would miss them. There's nothing better than being able to read when and where ever I want. No need to upgrade a book, no problems with a dead battery, no fear of losing a book/magazine because of a system failure or hd crash. Even though they might be outdated, I still think a print has a lot of positive sides. |

Hey everyone,
The topic of moving toward a digital media option is a hot one now. Personally I like printed media and reading my magazines in that format.
The future cannot be held back and so we are testing the waters on the new media format's interest with our readers.
We are not making any plans this year to move in that direction. More market research must be done.
Thanks for your input. _________________ Roy Ramsay

Roy, any chance that unavailable past issues will be made available digitally? _________________ We don't stop laughing because we get old, we get old because we stop laughing. |

I'm a paper person, prefer my magazines that way. Too set in my ways to change. But the teens and early twenty somethings of today, it is already starting to be just a part of life to them, to be plugged in where ever they are. Rich media is going to be huge!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0tiyneS6gY I watched this today, it came across my facebook. Just listen to him. |

| Standard format magazines are nice but I am willing to make little concessions for a huge cause. Any opportunity we have to decrease our use of paper is a really good thing. There are lots of portable digital devices and sooner or later, especially as they evolve, we would become comfortable with them and perhaps even prefer them. |

iPad is great, but too costly right now, still requires electricity, must be handled with greater care, and can't be folded to fit in my back pocket, so I wont be getting one in the near / foreseeable future.
Just seems we are too plugged in these days, and while I love technology, the best part of taking pictures, is getting outdoors and hopefully not worrying about batteries and the like!
Sitting and waiting for a photo op, or the right light, one can read one's magazine....until dark at least. _________________ Photo Bug |

Check the hazardous disposal sites for the amount of electronic wizardry being disposed of properly, or worse put into the normal waste and not handled correctly.
Like all modern electronics it is obsolete by they time you can buy it and there is something new one on the horizon to replace it.
for instance I'm guessing here the old ipad or new 3g ipad
You are trading one cause (farmed trees), for another (old junk full of toxic materials) filling the disposal sites. Not to mention the hazardous materials used in their construction that we don't have to see as all this modern electronic wizardry comes from Asia.
One good thing about the electronic form of information is you never have to pay for any of it.
You can always find it free somewhere if you search a bit.
And if you install the right ad-blockers (all available free) you never have to see any advertisements either!

Yes, there are many sides to every issue--take the electric car: In the USA, they would likely be polluting as much or more, since a great of power is generated there using coal and oil fired generators, whereas, here in Canada, we have much more hydroelectric power, so it makes more sense for us to consider electric.
Of course, the environmental impact is one thing, and jobs are another, but we can't sit still either.
I am always disappointed that after so many years, our railway system has not been updated very much--even the spread of the tracks is still based on the old wagons that they based them on!
Food for thought....
Later,

As an experiment, I scanned four issues of OPC at 200 dpi, saved the scans as .pdf files, and sent them to iBooks on my iPad. They're quite readable as they are, but I could zoom in if I had to. The files are a little large, but not excessively so. Two or three years worth would fit on a CD.
I would buy copies in this format, or in some ePub variation, but not if a specialised app had to be used to make the purchase. |
