I was a bit pissed to learn that Pentax did not update their software to work with my latest edition of Snow Leopard, and the USA division suggested that I should contact Pentax Canada and see if I could buy a version from them.
Seems to me that my K100D is not that old, and they should have kept pace.
Their Photo Lab software keeps crashing on me now, and does not always do what it should.

Too right! I think they should update their software as well!... It's funny, microsoft is not the only op anymore and i think it's really short sighted of a company like Pentax to ignore the steadily growing number of Apple users.
Eventually, the loss will be to Pentax for being so stoopid... boggles the mind. I think the only thing to do really,is complain.... and complain until somebody at Pentax gives their head a shake and realizes that they are going to lose out if their product is not functional for those of us who use Apple. bottom line. |

Yeah, especially when you consider that Apple users are more involved with photography than PC / IBM users and the weaker MS software!
It surprised me, and yes, I do intend to write a letter of complaint, as I have been considering purchasing a newer DSLR down the road, and now I am beginning to rethink whether I should stick with my beloved Pentax equipment. or make the switch (which means either Canon or Nikon as far as I am concerned!).
Mind you, no outfit is perfect these days, as the bean counters keep putting in their 2 cents and screwing things up!

LOL
you might want to surf through a few forums related to software and the Desgnated replacements on your Short list.
For Example the Capture NX Group on Flickr
I have zero knowledge about the Canon Apps but understand they are not well liked by Canon Users.
From what i hear on some groups Capture NX2 does not do that well on Snow leopard. Fixes are supposed to be in the works but who knows when they will happen.
Pentax may have their problems fixed sooner than the company you intend to switch off to and in that case you will have spent money on more pronlems and more frustration.
Life is full of compromise and any gains you make are going to cost you somewhere else
Hope it helps

It's true that every system has its bugs, but this kinda makes me wonder ' why' use NX Or (substitute camera brand here) when you can use Aperture3? ...shrug...
I've never used Capture, but so far i haven't found that there is anything i would like to do with my photos that i can't do in Aperture3 The simplicity and file management in that program are really top drawer. I haven't had a single bug problem, but again, so far the only programs i've used are Ap3 and CS4 (mac version).
Maybe a solution is to just stay away from the camera brand apps? Is there something that these camera specific aps can do that Aperture or CS4 cant do?
I still really believe that people should always complain about shoddy software though. Companies will never know their software doesn't work well and make improvements unless the customer makes them aware. |

I have or rather had NX for my old nikon, and have DPP from Canon for the EOS bodies.
But why bother with ether when CS5 is here, neither proprietary program comes close to what CS5 can do.
Same for Lightroom 3 , and I'm guessing Aperture.
My take is the bodies are from hardware manufacturers who are very good at making the hardware and coincidentally provide some software they found to get you going.
Applications should come from people who are skilled and dedicated at producing just software like Adobe. _________________ Peter.

And I'm a bit pissed that Epson's response to Snow Leopard on their Professional 3800 printer is to rig your system to use the ancient VISE installer. And my expensive Epson scanner I bought 5 years ago is also SOL.
NOT IMPRESSED BY EPSON once a model is off the sales shelves. They just give up on it and walk away from you. _________________ Making due with an old Jap plastic half frame for now. |

This seems to be a trend these days--years back, support was definitely better, but today's economy and with the "bean counters" basically calling the shots....well, I think we can expect more of the same!

I'm not sure I'd agree with that statement, however since I've had no issues with my "weaker" MS, I'll save myself $1900 and not buy that iMac I had my eye on. |
