Forum Annoyances

Hello everyone,

In an effort to make this a better forum for everyone to enjoy please reply to this post listing your annoyances with its operation or features or lack of features. I will see what I can do to make this an easier user interface.

The reason we changed it was to make it easier and self contained on the OPC website.

Search feature

One of the things I have noticed that is missing on the new forum is the ' search'  feature. How do we do a search for a specific topic without having to scroll through all the posts.

The only small thing I would

The only small thing I would change would be to allow a post to receive instant email notifications.  I know on other forums I participate in, I can subsribe to a post and get an email every time someone adds to it.

Other than that, well done I thoroughly enjoy the site!

SPAM

Roy, the two posts above my last one look awfully much like Spam.  Your IT guys should deep-six these and prevent these guys from posting on this forum in the future, if that feature is available to administrators.

Cheers,

WesternGUy

Yes I see them now. I have

Yes I see them now. I have deleted the posts and we are looking at how to prevent this in future. We can block those users, but it looks like they may have several "sleeper" accounts as well to post spam in the future. We will need to cull our registrar list to get these out then institute an administrator approval system for future registrations.

Sorry about this. I know what  a pain they can be.

Scrolling up and down to get in and out of a discussion thread.

It would be nice to not have to scroll back up to the top of a discussion thread to return to the main forum.  Perhaps the "return" links that are posted at the top of each discussion could also be posted at the bottom somehow, then I don't have to scroll back to the top to return to the main forum.  Most other forums give you some form of an option to do this, either from a list or selection box that will display a list of things you can return to when you are at the bottom of the discussion.  Some of these threads get fairly long and it is a bit of nuisance to have to scroll all the way down to the bottom to read the latest posting and then scroll all the way back up to the top to return to the main forum or others.

WesternGuy

P.S.  Why are there no smilies?  Every other forum seems to have them - even my e-mail has them!

Hey WesternGuy, You can

Hey WesternGuy,

You can sort the threads by newest first so that you don't have to scroll all the way to the bottom. That is what I am doing and it works better.

Yeah I miss the emoticons too. I will see what I can do about that also.

Preview and description issues now fixed

Okay the issues of previewing your posts and replies are now fixed so that you do not have to preview your text. Also descriptions that are added to uploaded images will now show.

Keep the comments coming so that we can continually improve this site.

Cheers

Preview and save - -two step process - annoying.

Roy, I am finding this "two-step" process of getting something posted to be a pain in the you know what.  I frequent a number of photography forums and some others related to techie things and this is the only one I know that forces you to "Preview" your offering before it can be posted (Saved).  I must confess that I do not understand why this is necessary, I mean if I make a spelling mistake or something similar, I can simply edit the post and then save it again.

In my opinion, this process is definitely something that you can do away with and the sooner the better.  It will eventually turn me off from even bothering to post anything on this forum, because it is very frustrating thing to have to do - Preview then Save...and no Smilies to boot!!

WesternGuy

I agree again

Well WesternGuy,

I just posted a couple of replies and have to say that it is an annoying 2-step process. I will address this with our IT guy and see if we can change that.

Image Information

After using the site for a few weeks now, I find that I've gotten into a regular routine of browsing around.  For the most part, I'm getting used to the way it works. But, one thing that I find annoying is that the information entered in our "contest" images does not appear on the initial viewing.  I would bet that a lot of people don't realize that there is more information about our images when you click on the "tags subjects".

I think the contest part of the site would be much more interesting if information entered about the images was visible underneath the image.  I believe that small stories about the image by the author would inspire other people to comment much more than they do now.

Thanks for reading.

I agree

Hey Andre,

I agree wholeheartedly! I have addressed this with our IT guy and we are working on that.

That Makes A Big Difference!

Thanks for taking care of that issue Roy.

What a difference!  I know a picture is worth a 1000 words, but a little story is often priceless.  Another site I've been posting to for years does something similar by having fields for camera and lens information as well as a small "about" section for a small story about the image.

Browsing through the images again has added a whole new dimension to them.
Definitely an improvement.

Thanks,
Andre

Yes, I've hit that odd spam

Yes, I've hit that odd spam filter message a few time.
And all I was trying to do was give a url to a post or image somewhere.

Some of the other annoyances at least for me :)

  1. I've also gotten a enter captcha on some posts, no idea why, and I really I  mean really hate captchas. Especially If you are already logged in.
  2. Mentioned this one before, no way to delete a erronous post (at least not that I can see)
  3. Not fond of the way the input box inserts <p></p>  anytime you try for a line break,
have to re-edit each post by going to its html source to get it to format nicer,
IE: replace the extranious <p><.p> with a simple <br />

Images

One annoyance would be the difficulty in getting the images we upload to appear, or when we link to a photo hosted elsewhere it does not appear.  The images will appear in the edit screen for posts, but not the general forum.  Also, when the image uploader cautions that images are not to excede 2mb and you attempt to upload a 5.63 kb file the message comes up that you are over your space quota seems odd.

The second annoyance at this time is the message that comes up when you enter a post and the screen displays the warning that the post has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted.

"Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted."

"The selected file snowscape_-_outdoor_photography_canada_1292614311051.jpeg could not be uploaded. The file is 5.63 KB which would exceed your disk quota of 2 MB"

Thank you guys, I have our

Thank you guys,

I have our IT department looking into these issues and we hope to have them resolved. Please be sure to let us know if anything more comes up.
