What is the definition of a Canadian Songbird for contest purposes?
- Must be a species native to Canada?
- Must have been taken in Canada?
- Must be a "Passerine", i.e. belong to a familiy listed in this taxonomical category?
- If not, what would be a legitimate entry? Would herons or raptors qualify as entries?
Reason: Among the current contest entries is one that shows a species that is not a songbird, at least not by the songbird definition used in Bird Books or lined out in wikipedia etc.

What is a Songbird
Hello Ulli,
For the purposes of the contest, the definition of a song bird can be taken somewhat loosely. It does not have to conform to the Wikipedia definition. Having said that obvious species such as those from the heron family and raptors should be excluded.
On your other questions:
The species does not have to be native to Canada, but it must be shot within Canada. Birds shot in zoos and sanctuaries that are not wild would not qualify as they did not arrive here under their own power. Birds that typically would be only found in the tropics for example are not eligible unless for some reason they are living wild here in Canada.
If there are any concerns over adherence to the contest please email me at editor@outdoorphotographycanada.com and I will review the images in question.
Thank you
