Breaking the Rules
Making your compositions sing

When we first pick up a camera, most of us don’t know the “rules” of composition. We tend to centre our subjects, we split the horizon evenly in the frame and we don’t fill the frame with our subject. Through trial and error, reading and guidance from other photographers, we learn about the guidelines to better composition and we stop making these mistakes. Soon we have a formula for successful compositions and we don’t stray from these “biblical” guidelines.

Good photographers know that all rules are made to be broken and that sometimes shooting at the margins of composition can result in more evocative imagery than following the tried and true. Let’s take a closer look at the common rules of composition and when shattering these rules can make your images sing....
